Renee Schulte: Does intuition make better policies?

Renee Schulte has over 20 years of leadership experience as a therapist, policymaker, and consultant in the mental health field. Her work in the public and private sectors has given her a unique understanding of the policy complexities in this area. Renee is nationally recognized for her expertise in behavioral health policy, system design, approach and financial analysis, and strategic consulting.  As a consultant, she has worked with multiple states creating strategic plans, legislation, and regulations.  Her newest project, Making Healthier Policies, is designed to teach others how to develop healthy policy while navigating this hyper-partisan, overly political season. She and her husband, Brent, reside in Urbandale, Iowa.

• We need to start with communication. We can’t force people into a policy they don’t want and expect that things will go back to the way they were. Instead, we need to ask our people what will work for them if we’re going to maintain the strength and health of the organization.
• As a worker, you need to be the primary advocate of your health and communicate what will work best for you. As a manager, you need to realize that what works is different for each person.
• The organization cannot exist without the individuals; we have to prioritize each one’s health and well-being while at the same time setting the direction, laying the goals and plans for the future.
• Sleep more. If you sleep less than six hours, you’ll be three times more at risk of getting sick.
